Why the perforations are spaced the way they are, and what happens at other spacings.

The Two-Inch Rule

Two inches is the practical unit of error in a real room. Rugs are woven to tolerance and rooms are built to tolerance, so field corrections almost always land within an inch or two. A 2-inch increment absorbs that without leaving a visible pad edge.

What would finer spacing cost?

More lines means more places the pad can separate where you did not intend, and a weaker edge under the compression of a rug plus furniture. Precision you cannot use is not precision.

What would coarser spacing cost?

Removing four or six inches at a time overshoots the correction. Now the pad is materially smaller than the rug, the perimeter is unsupported, and you have created the exact failure a pad exists to prevent.

Why does two inches land right?

One strip resolves the overwhelming majority of field corrections, and the pad still finishes about an inch inside the rug's edge where it belongs.

It is also the right size for a human hand to tear in one motion, which matters more than it sounds.

How do perforated rug pads work?

What if the pad edge is visible after install?

Remove one 2-inch perforation strip from the offending side. Because the pad is designed to sit about an inch inside the rug's edge, one strip usually resolves it completely.

How much smaller than the rug should a rug pad be?

The standard rule is roughly one inch smaller than the rug on each side, so the pad disappears under the rug's edge. Order at your rug's finished dimensions and the pad is cut to that convention automatically.
