Perforation Technology

How the patented 2-inch perforations work and why they replace scissors.

Short answer

Perforation Technology

The pad is cut to your rug's dimensions at the factory, then scored with perforations every 2 inches along the adjustable edges. On site you tear along a perforation line to remove a 2-inch strip, exactly like tearing a paper towel. No scissors, no measuring, no dust.

How do perforated rug pads work?

The pad is cut to your rug's dimensions at the factory, then scored with perforations every 2 inches along the adjustable edges. On site you tear along a perforation line to remove a 2-inch strip, exactly like tearing a paper towel. No scissors, no measuring, no dust.

What is a scissorless rug pad install?

A scissorless install means the pad reaches its final size without a cutting tool. Because the pad ships cut to your rug size and perforated in 2-inch increments, any final adjustment is done by hand. Nothing sharp comes out on a client's floor.

Why are the perforations spaced 2 inches apart?

Two inches is the practical unit of error in a real room. Rugs are woven to tolerance and rooms are built to tolerance, so field adjustments almost always fall within an inch or two. A 2-inch increment covers that variance without leaving a visible pad edge.

Is the perforation technology patented?

Yes. The perforated custom-cut rug pad is UnderItAll's patented innovation and is not available from conventional pad suppliers. It is the reason a pad can be both cut to order and adjustable after it arrives.

Do the perforations show through the rug?

No. The perforations are shallow scoring on a dense felt pad that sits under the full body of a rug. They are invisible underfoot and do not telegraph through pile, flatweave, or hide.

Can the pad tear accidentally along a perforation?

Not in normal use. The perforations require a deliberate two-hand pull to separate. Once the rug is set on top, the pad is under compression and the scoring holds indefinitely.

Which edges of the pad are perforated?

Pads are perforated along the adjustable edges so you can reduce either dimension on site. Because the pad already arrives cut to your rug size, most installs never need to use them, but they are there when the room disagrees with the drawing.

How is this different from an ordinary cut-to-order rug pad?

A conventional cut-to-order pad is final. If the room or the rug is off by an inch, you are back to shears. A perforated pad is cut to order and still adjustable, which is what makes a single visit install realistic.

Are the perforations the same as scoring a pad with a knife?

No. Knife scoring cuts through the face and weakens the pad unpredictably. Factory perforations are engineered at a controlled depth and spacing so the separation is clean, straight, and repeatable every time.

Do the perforations reduce how well the pad grips?

No. Grip comes from the density and surface of the felt across the full area of the pad, not from the edges. Removing a 2-inch strip changes the pad's dimensions and nothing about its performance.

What does Rapid Relax mean?

Rapid Relax describes how quickly the felt releases its roll memory after unpacking. The pad lies flat almost immediately instead of needing to be weighted overnight, which is what makes a same-day install possible.
