The Daisy Grip backing holds through pattern and friction across thousands of small contact points rather than through tack or adhesive. Nothing bonds to the floor, which is why the pad leaves no residue and why it can sit on a finished floor for years without marking it.

What is the difference between mechanical and chemical grip?

Chemical grip sticks. Mechanical grip resists. A latex backing holds because it is slightly tacky against the floor; a Daisy Grip holds because its pattern and the pad's density resist lateral movement.

One of those two approaches has a shelf life. The other does not.

Does it work on every indoor surface?

Hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, porcelain, ceramic, marble, terrazzo, and sealed concrete. On very slick stone the 1/4 inch pad's extra mass does more of the work.

Does ripping a strip reduce the grip?

No. Grip comes from the whole area of the pad, not its edges. Removing 2 inches changes the pad's dimensions and nothing about how it holds.
