What does cutting rug pads actually cost you?
Every rug you install has a pad that somebody sizes by hand, and a box it arrives in. Put your own numbers in and see what both cost across a year.
Short answer
Cutting a rug pad on site typically takes 20 to 45 minutes per rug once you count measuring, laying blue tape, cutting felt without a table, and cleanup. Pads cut to size also ship together rather than one box each, which cuts the freight by about a third at two pads an order and about half at six or more. At 8 rugs a month and a blended firm rate, that is roughly 32 hours of labor and a four-figure shipping saving a year — before any return visit caused by a bad cut.
Figures are an estimate built from your own inputs, not a quote. The 20-minute default reflects what measuring, taping, cutting and cleanup usually take per rug — adjust it to match your crews.

Minutes per rug
Defaults to 20, adjustable from 20 to 45. This is the on-site cutting step a pre-cut, perforated pad removes — not the whole install.
Whose hour it is
Crew cost, firm blended rate, or designer billable. The three produce very different numbers, so the tool asks rather than assuming.
Shipping consolidation
Freight is banded on order value, so a pad shipped alone pays the worst rate on the card. Two pads an order returns about a third of that, four returns about 42%, and six or more about half.
Return visits
Off by default. A bad cut on install day has no same-day remedy, and when that happens the trip costs more than the pad ever did.

How much time do perforated rug pads save on an install?
Measuring, taping, and hand-cutting a felt pad to a rug typically runs twenty to forty-five minutes per rug, plus cleanup. A perforated pad needs seconds per adjusted side and no cleanup, so most teams recover the better part of a working hour on a multi-rug install.
What tools do I need to install the pad?
None. Unroll the pad, let it relax for a moment, pull along a perforation line if the room requires adjustment, and set the rug on top. No shears, knives, tape, or adhesive.
How long does a rug pad install take?
For a pad ordered at the correct rug size, under two minutes: unroll, position, set the rug. If a side needs adjusting, add a few seconds per perforation strip removed.
Can rug pads be resized during installation?
Yes. That is the point of the perforations. If the room or the rug measures differently than expected, pull along a perforation line to remove a 2-inch strip. It takes seconds per side and requires no tools.
