The Install-Day Checklist

Six items. Print it, hand it to whoever is on site.

Short answer

The Install-Day Checklist

A rug install-day checklist covers six things: a clean and fully cured floor, the pad matched to the rug schedule, the pad unrolled and relaxed, adjustment by ripping perforations if needed, the rug set, and all four edges checked for visible pad.

What goes on the list?

In order, because the order matters:

  • Floor clean, dry, and fully cured
  • Pad matches the rug on the schedule
  • Unroll in final position and let it relax
  • Rip 2-inch strips where the room disagrees
  • Set the rug, then place furniture
  • Walk all four edges and confirm no pad shows

Why unroll in position?

Because felt grips. Dragging a relaxed pad across a finished floor is the one moment in this process where you can scuff something.

Why furniture last?

So legs land on supported rug rather than on an unpadded edge. It also means you are not moving a sofa to rip a strip you missed.

What should be on an install-day checklist for rugs?

Confirm the floor is clean and fully cured, verify the pad matches the rug schedule, unroll the pad and let it relax, adjust with perforations if needed, set the rug, and check all four edges for pad visibility.

What tools do I need to install the pad?

None. Unroll the pad, let it relax for a moment, pull along a perforation line if the room requires adjustment, and set the rug on top. No shears, knives, tape, or adhesive.

What if the pad edge is visible after install?

Remove one 2-inch perforation strip from the offending side. Because the pad is designed to sit about an inch inside the rug's edge, one strip usually resolves it completely.

How long should I wait after a floor is finished before laying a rug pad?

Follow the finish manufacturer's guidance, typically two to four weeks for a site-applied urethane. Covering a finish before it fully cures can trap solvents regardless of which pad you use.
