Why not just square off a round rug?

Because the corners show. A round rug on a square pad has four spots where the pad reaches past the rug's edge, and no amount of pushing it under fixes geometry.

How do you measure a round rug?

Diameter at two points, ninety degrees apart. Handmade rounds are rarely perfect circles, and the difference tells you what to order to.

What about genuinely irregular shapes?
