Rug pads are still trimmed by hand on site because the industry treated the pad as a commodity rather than a product. Stock sizes never match a real rug, so somebody ends up on the floor with shears. Perforated, cut-to-order pads remove the step entirely.

How did this become normal?

Rug pads got sold by the roll. Rolls come in a handful of widths, rugs come in every size ever woven, and the gap between the two became somebody's job on install day.

Once that was true for long enough, it stopped looking like a problem. It looked like the work.

What does the scissors step actually cost?
