Two Years of Grip & Rip

What we got right, what surprised us, and what designers actually use the perforations for.

Short answer

Two Years of Grip & Rip

After two years of scissorless installs, the pattern is clear: most pads are never adjusted at all, because cut-to-order sizing is already correct. The perforations earn their place on the minority of jobs where the room disagrees with the drawing — and that minority is what used to cause second trips.

What surprised us?

How often the perforations go unused. When a pad is cut to the rug's real dimensions, it usually just fits. Designers told us that was the point — they were not buying an adjustment feature, they were buying the confidence to not need one.

Where do they get used?

Consistently in three situations:

  • Handmade rugs that measure differently end to end
  • Rooms built to tolerance rather than to drawing
  • A rug substitution made after the pad was ordered

What changed in how firms order?

They stopped ordering speculatively. Because cutting and shipping happens same or next business day, ordering after rug delivery is confirmed became the norm rather than a risk.

Is the perforation technology patented?

Yes. The perforated custom-cut rug pad is UnderItAll's patented innovation and is not available from conventional pad suppliers. It is the reason a pad can be both cut to order and adjustable after it arrives.

How is this different from an ordinary cut-to-order rug pad?

A conventional cut-to-order pad is final. If the room or the rug is off by an inch, you are back to shears. A perforated pad is cut to order and still adjustable, which is what makes a single visit install realistic.

Can rug pads be resized during installation?

Yes. That is the point of the perforations. If the room or the rug measures differently than expected, pull along a perforation line to remove a 2-inch strip. It takes seconds per side and requires no tools.

Why is a custom-cut pad not on a long lead time?

Conventional custom pads are cut by a third party from stock rolls, adding a handoff and a queue. UnderItAll manufactures and cuts in one Georgia operation, so a custom size is a production instruction rather than a special order.
