An undersized pad leaves the rug's perimeter unsupported, so every footstep flexes the foundation against a hard floor. On a hand-knotted or antique rug that is exactly where the warp gives out. The pad should sit about an inch inside the rug on every side, no further.

Where do rugs actually wear out?

At the edges and under furniture legs. Both are load concentration problems, and both are solved by a pad that reaches nearly to the rug's edge.

Why do people end up with pads that are too small?
